Abstract:Objective: To explore the relationship between the expression of galectin-3 and diabetic nephropathy.Methods: The diabetic model was established in 30 of 2-month male Wistar rats by a single injection...Objective: To explore the relationship between the expression of galectin-3 and diabetic nephropathy.Methods: The diabetic model was established in 30 of 2-month male Wistar rats by a single injection of streptozotocin(STZ) at a dose of 55 mg/kg body wt in citrate buffer(pH4.2) and compared with the results from 30 control rats.Semi-quantitative immunohistochemistry was used to observe the expression of galectin-3 4,8,12 weeks after diabete induction respectively.Results: Galectin-3 protein had not been detected in glomeruli from nondiabetic rats till the end of study.Excluding at 8 weeks of disease duration,galectin-3 expression was found increased thereafter in diabetic group.It suggested a more pronounced expression compared with age-matched nondiabetic controls.Conversely,galectin-3 was expressed in tubuli from both nondiabetic and diabetic rats,with an increased staining in diabetic versus nondiabetic animals at all time points examined.An intimate relationship existed between the expression of galectin-3 in glomeruli from diabetic rats and early diabetic nephropathy.Conclusion: In hyperglycemia condition,the up-regulating galectin-3 may play an important role in the progression of diabetic nephropathy,which awaits further investigation.Read More
