Title: Relevance-Theoretic Account for Culture-Loaded Words and Translation
Abstract: From the relevance-theoretic perspective, culture-loaded words and expressions arise from the different cognitive environments of the English people and the Chinese. So the same thing that is endowed with different associative or symbolized meanings is not mutually manifest to them. In translating culture-loaded words or expressions, such translation techniques as literal translation, literal translation with notes, free translation, translation of image exchange, and translation by addition or omission can be used. No matter which technique is used, the translator must take the target reader’s cognitive environments into consideration on the basis of conveying the original writer’s communicative intention and thus make the translation optimally relevant.
