Abstract: The differences between China and West in history, social customs, religious practices, ideology and etc. bring forth many issues that need to be addressed in the process of translation. One of them is non-equivalent words, that is, some words and expressions conveying the features of English traditional culture have no equivalents in Chinese. Is it possible to translate them? This paper discusses the possibility of translation on the basis of the definition and standard of translation, the generality of human language and thought and the practice of intercultural translation.
