During the European Program DRIVE II, a project called ADS showed the potential to build a multilane ADS with an innovative solution, not based upon Slotted-Aloha protocol, and suitable to operate in a fully multilane ambient. The same solution was presented with success under technical/economical point of views in Singapore and is under trial in Germany. In Italy, for the first time in history, an integrated multilane motorway with automatic fee collection for road pricing and parking payment in a city will be built and operated. These payment systems will be integrated to obtain not only technical compatibility, but interoperability between different transport services and transport operators. A brief architecture of the integrated system is presented using the solution described, accompanied with results obtained in a real environment in terms of mobility improvement, energy conservation, congestion, and air quality problems. The Italian experience is a good starting point for the European Union where the need to introduce fee collection in motorways and cities combined with the barriers elimination through all the European countries is a real necessity.Read More
