Title: The us strategic highway research program and its impact
Abstract: The US Strategic Highway Research Programme (SHRP) is described in detail. The origins, organisation and funding of SHRP are outlined. The programme is divided into the following four areas: Pavement Performance; Asphalt; Concrete and Structures; and Highway Operations. Brief details about ongoing projects in each area are provided. Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) projects are recording data on up to 5000 parameters on 2600 test sections in the USA and abroad. The Asphalt Research Programme concentrates on asphalt binder and asphalt-aggregate mixture specifications. The SUPERPHALT programme for mix design and SUPERPAVE technologies are described. Concrete issues under consideration include alkali-silica reactivity, chloride-induced corrosion, and cathodic protection. The Highway Operations Programme is evaluating maintenance procedures. SHRP results are expected to be influential worldwide and particular attention is being paid to the development of easily implemented SHRP products.
