Title: BETTER, SAFER ROADS RESULT FROM 5-YEAR RESEARCH PROGRAM
Abstract: This article briefly discusses the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), a $150 million, five-year technological study that is moving to conclusion with an impressive record of accomplishments. The largest research effort of its kind ever conducted, SHRP has identified possible improvements in asphalt and concrete and addressed such important areas of concern as high-performance pavements, cost-effective maintenance procedures, snow and ice control, and worker safety. As the research portion of SHRP's work comes to a close, attention will focus on getting the results used. Legislation passed in 1991 authorized about $50 million for this purpose, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is working with the states to promote adoption of the new technologies. The National Research Council's Transportation Research Board will oversee the storage and management of the data from the continuing long-term pavement field tests under a special committee. It also will assist FHWA to establish and monitor activities that will bring SHRP research results into everyday engineering practice.
