Title: A Comparative study of intravenous valproate and lithium in the treatment of acute mania
Abstract: Objective To explore clinical efficacy and safety of intravenous valproate and Lithium in the treatment of acute mania.MethodsForty patients with acute mania were randomized into study group(intravenous valproate combined with lithium) and control group(single lithium) for a 4-week treatment,and were measured with Bech-Rafaelsen mania rating scale(BRMS) and treatment emergent symptom scale(TESS) in 1st、7th、14th、28th day of the treatment.ResultsThere was no significant difference in efficacy between the two groups.Score of BRMS decreased significantly at the 7th day in study group,while at the 14th day in control group.The rates of efficacy and significant improvement in study group were 85% and 55% respectively,and in control group were 90% and 35% respectively.There were no significant differences in side effects between two groups.ConclusionIntravenous valproate combined with lithium is effective in the treatment of acute mania.
