Title: Effect of valsartan and metoprolol on plasma endothelin and nitric oxide in elderly patients with essential hypertension
Abstract: Objective To explore the effect of valsartan and metoprolol on plasma endothelin(ET) and nitric oxide(NO) in elderly patients with essential hypertension(EH).Methods Sixty-seven elderly patients with EH were randomly divided into two groups and treated with valsartan or metoprolol for eight weeks. The levels of blood pressure,ET and NO levels were detected and analyzed. Results After treatment, the blood pressure of the two groups decreased significanfly(P0.01).The plasma level of ET decreased significantly(P0.01) and the plasma level of NO increased significantly in Valsartan group(P0.01).Conclusions Valsartan might not only prevent EH from development but also prevent vascular endothelium from being damaged in EH.
