Title: Toward the Translation of the English Pun into Chinese
Abstract: The pun is considered most challenging in the field of translation. The English pun is often rendered into Chinese in the following ways. The best choice is to find a pun equivalent in Chinese and this applies to those puns that bear similarities in the common human cognitive process and to some of those that rest upon structural ambiguity. The pun that aims merely at laughter is often replaced by another pun on a word with a different but associated meaning. The third way is to create a quasi-pun through the exploitation of the phonic, semantic,or graphic features. For those puns that demonstrate the particular cultural or linguistic features, compensation is often introduced in translation by providing necessary notes, explanation,or background information.Such ways as omission, transplantation and homophonic creation are also adopted in the translation of puns.
