Title: Expression and significance of PTEN、VEGF in the carcinogenesis of oral squamous cell cancer
Abstract: Objective To investigate the protein expression and its significance of PTEN、VEGF in the carcinogenesis of oral squamous cell cancer(OSCC).Methods The protein expression of PTEN and VEGF in formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue from 10 cases of normal oral mucosa,10 cases of oral epithelial hyperplasia,15 cases of oral epithelial dysplasia and 32 cases of OSCC was analysed by immunohistochemical method. Results The positive rates of PTEN protein were 100%(10/10)、100%(10/10)、 93.3%(14/15) and 71.9%(23/32) in normal oral mucosa, oral epithelial hyperplasia, oral epithelial dysplasia and OSCC,respectively. The positive rates in OSCC were significantly lower than those in normal oral mucosa, oral epithelial hyperplasia, oral epithelial dysplasia. There was a significant difference (P 0.05) of expression of PTEN protein between well differentiated OSCC ( 85.7% PTEN positive) and poorly differentiated OSCC( 33.3% PTEN positive).Furthermore, the protein expression of PTEN was inversely correlated with that of VEGF though without any significance (P 0.05).Conclusion Loss and reduced expression of PTEN protein is common in carcinogenesis and progression of OSCC,which may contribute to carcinogenesis and progression of OSCC by decreasing cellular adhesion、increasing angiogenesis and so on.
