Title: Correlation between transforming growth factor-β1 mRNA expression and angiogenesis in oral squamous cell carcinoma
Abstract: Objective: To investigate the correlation between transforming growth factor-β1(TGF-β1) gene expression and clinicopathologic characteristics in oral squamous cell carcinoma(OSCC).Methods: TGF-β1 mRNA and protein epression in 48 cases of OSCC and 10 cases of normal controls were detected by in-situ hybridization and immunohistochemical staining respectively, microvessel density(MVD) in OSCC was measured.Statistical analysis was performed using t-test and chi-square test by SPSS 13.0.Results: TGF-β1 mRNA and protein were mainly detected in cytoplasm in OSCC cells. The expression of TGF-β1 mRNA and protein were significantly higher in OSCC than in normal oral tissues(P0.01).Lymph node metastasis and infiltration depth of OSCC cells were closely correlated with TGF-β1 expression(P0.05),but there was no significant correlation between the positive expression and sex,age of the patients and the differentiation degree of OSCC(P0.05).TGFF-β1 expression was positively correlated with MVD in OSCC(P0.01).Conclusion: TGF-β1 overexpression in OSCC may play a potential role in the development, lymph node metastasis and the angiogenesis of OSCC.
