Title: Expression of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase and its relationship with lymph node metastasis in breast invasive ductal carcinoma
Abstract: Objective: To investigate the expression of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(p38 MAPK) and its relationship with lymph node metastasis and other clinicopathological features in breast invasive ductal carcinoma. Methods: The expressions of p38 MAPK and phosphorylated p38(p-p38) were determined by immunohistochemical S-P method in 60 cases of breast invasive ductal carcinoma and by Western blot in 30 cases of breast invasive ductal carcinoma and 5 paratumor normal tissues. The relationship between the expressions of p38 MAPK and p-p38 and the clinicopathological features was analyzed by chi-square test and t test. Results: The p38 protein was mainly located in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells in breast cancer and normal breast tissue, and the p-p38 protein was mainly located in the nuclear in breast cancer. The positive expression rates of p38 and p-p38 in breast cancer with lymph node metastasis were significantly higher than those in breast cancer without lymph node metastasis(p38 76.3% vs.40.9%,P 0.01;p-p38 68.4% vs.36.4%,P 0.05).The expressions of p38 and p-p38 were correlated with the clinical stages, but no relationship was found between their expressions and the patient's age and tumor size. Conclusion: The expressions of p38 and p-p38 are correlated with lymph node metastasis in breast cancer, and p38 MAPK signaling pathway plays an important role in the invasion and metastasis of breast cancer.
