Title: CT evaluation on morphologic patterns and sites of local tumor progression after radiofrequency ablation in rabbit VX2 liver tumor
Abstract: Objective To detect morphologic patterns and sites of local tumor progression(LTP) with CT in rabbit VX2 liver tumor after radiofrequency ablation(RFA).Methods VX2 tumor tissue blocks were implanted in liver of 30 New Zealand rabbits.Fourteen days after implantation,30 rabbits with single VX2 hepatic tumor were randomly divided into study group(n=21) and control group(n=9),and RFA was performed. The entire tumor and less than 5 mm peripheral normal margin at least in one side were included in study group, while the entire tumor and about 10 mm peripheral normal margin were included in control group.CT scan was performed 3,7 and 14 days after RFA.Each time after CT scan,7 rabbits in study group and 3 rabbits in control group were selected and scarified. Results Single VX2 hepatic tumor was induced into 30 rabbits successfully with average diameter 15 mm.Totally 5 rabbits died before and after RFA treatment, including 3 rabbits in study group and 2 in control group. Each time after CT scan,6 rabbits in study group were scarified.Seven rabbits in control group completed the experiment.Twenty-five lesions of LTP in 18 rabbits were found in study group, including 18 LTP around insufficient ablated margin, while no viable tumor cells were found around ablative margin in control group. Most LTPs were around the transverse diameter of ablation zone(P=0.011).Conclusion LTP of hepatic VX2 tumor after RFA has some particular morphology.LTP relates to the insufficient of ablation range.
