Abstract: Curbing motor vehicle crashes is one obvious way to cut the cost of health care in the United States. This article focuses on three areas in which improvement will mean dollars saved on health care: alcohol-related crashes, on-the-job collisions, and safer automobiles. Traffic safety organizations, such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, are lobbying for tougher legislation and stricter enforcement of drunk driving laws. More companies are developing and implementing safety programs to reduce the cost of workers' compensation. And, the auto industry is responding to consumers request for safer with a variety of new features, such as dual air bags. Crash avoidance via intelligent vehicle highway systems (IVHS) or smart vehicles is the focus of future traffic safety projects.
