Abstract: Prior to the mid-1920s, Americans paid little concern to traffic safety, accepting the steady rise in accidents as part of the price being paid for modern, high-volume paved roads. However, car and truck manufacturers were years ahead in fighting for safety on the highways. The automotive industry in its earliest days began focusing on minimizing failures that cause accidents, and making it easier for drivers to operate safely even when their own lapses, or the carelessness of others, confront them with a dangerous situation. Even so, many laypeople believe that changes in vehicle design alone can bring a solution to traffic accidents. Most accidents are actually caused by careless, reckless, or untrained drivers. This article focuses on areas that are key to minimizing traffic accidents and fatalities, such as vehicle design, highway design and engineering, traffic control, driver training, and better pedestrian awareness.
