Title: NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL'S HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY DIVISION DRIVES CHANGE: COLLISION COSTS STILL TOO HIGH
Abstract: The 344-member Highway Traffic Safety Division of the National Safety Council focuses on one central priority: diminishing the number of deaths on U.S. roadways. Because no one silver bullet can address all of the factors that contribute to a roadway fatality, members divide their expertise and tackle contributing points individually. The division's comprehensive approach focuses on vehicle manufacture, roadway engineering, and the human factor. The division has singled out several issues to rally around as it enters the millennium: overinvolvement of sport utility vehicles in highway crashes, aggressive driving habits, roadway safety, aging drivers, smart air bags, young drunk drivers, use of alcohol and other drugs, motorcycle helmets, use of cellular phones while operating a motor vehicle, pedestrian safety, driver fatigue and the effects of alcohol and other drugs on driver fatigue, work zone safety, and the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) planning and environmental provisions.
