Title: Centrico's contribution to traffic management and traveller information for the TERN
Abstract: Centrico is, in terms of budget, the largest of seven so called Euro-regional ITS projects in Europe. The objective of these projects that are supported by the European Commission is to foster harmonization and deployment of ITS measure on crucial parts of the Trans-European Road network. Centrico covers a major part of North-West Europe, including The Netherlands, Belgium, and adjacent parts of Germany, France and England. Partners are road authorities and network operators in these countries. Since Centrico came into life in 1996, a good number of initiatives in the domains of traffic management and traffic information have been started and executed. This paper gives an overview about the most interesting results, lessons learned and problems encountered particularly concerning those that might apply to any similar project. These include: 1. developing and operating of cross border traffic management corridors through automatic rerouting systems or traffic management plans; 2. Information and data exchange between Traffic Control Centres; 3. providing of information to private partners like service providers; 4. developing of harmonized rules (e.g. signing or operation principles) for ITS measures; 5. Approaches to improve the exchange of experience between technical experts.
