Title: TRAFFIC PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM
Abstract: This paper describes the uses which could be made on Indian highways of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). A highly co-ordinated framework is required for a number of different systems to work cohesively. At present simple systems are needed to collect and process road traffic data and communicate it to road users and traffic management personnel, including signal control. In cities, advanced traffic management systems would use sophisticated technologies for incident management, toll collection, parking management, pedestrian facilities and urban public transport integration, including advanced traveller information systems. Outside cities, inter-urban roads could benefit from a range of measures to improve road and travel conditions, including traffic control and surveillance, electronic toll collection, variable message signs and driver information. For the proposed expressways, a fully integrated monitoring and advisory system is suggested incorporating most of the above features. Implementation will need to address traffic education at school level, urban transport authorities, and government or private partnerships. For the covering abstract see ITRD E116046.
