Title: San Joaquin RTD Making Strides in Revitalizing Transit
Abstract: In this article the author describes strides taken by the Stockton, California San Joaquin Regional Transit District (RTD) to improve its transit services. One of the centerpieces of such efforts is the new $14 million transit center in downtown Stockton, which occupies a city block and serves about 5,000 customers daily. The station has four bus lanes with five bus cutouts for each lane, allowing customers to wait indoors for the next bus. The facility also provides bus pass services and contains an operator break room. The article discusses RTD’s American with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant Hopper line that has been in operation since 2002. RTD’s bus rapid transit (BRT) line, Metro Express, is also discussed. The service uses diesel-electric hybrid buses that are equipped with signal priority devices, with a total system cost of $5.2 million for vehicles, signal control, shelters, construction costs, and marketing costs.
