Abstract: Officials at the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCTA) hope that MAX, the new 7-mile bus rapid transit (BRT) system scheduled to open July 2005 in Kansas City, will help bring improved transit service to the area. While a light rail system was the preferred modal choice, voters twice rejected ballot initiatives, and instead favored a less expensive solution to meet the community’s transportation needs. The article describes the various efforts that have been made towards marketing the new BRT system. Smart styling of the vehicles, distinctive metal-and-glass bus shelters, and the availability of real-time bus arrival information at the shelters are some of the key system features.
