Abstract:This article presents an overview on interoperability in Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS), noting that a wide range of major cooperative projects, with interoperability as an objective, are bei...This article presents an overview on interoperability in Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS), noting that a wide range of major cooperative projects, with interoperability as an objective, are being launched. It describes how the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has begun an evaluation of nine innovative ITS projects that receive funding under the ITS Integration Program. The Capital Wireless Integrated Network Demonstration Project (CapWIN) in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, is one such project, involving the integration of a transportation and criminal justice mobile wireless information network. Some of the other projects being that will be evaluated include a statewide Integrated Transportation Management System in Delaware; deployment of a roadway and subsurface sensor system to forecast pavement conditions in Nebraska; and, the Gateway Travel Information System which will provide traffic data to traffic operations centers and motorists in the Gary-Chicago-Milwaukee corridor project.Read More
