Title: THE "SMITH" PROJECT: SUPPORTING THE TITOS OPEN ITS PLATFORM AND TEST-BED
Abstract: TITOS (Torino ITS 2000 Open Showcase) is the name given to the open intelligent transport systems (ITS) platform set up to provide an opportunity for ITS operators to access data, services, communication channels and terminals by means of currently available and emerging European standards. The basic purpose of the platform is to stimulate and promote the rapid take-up of new technological developments in the ITS field, helping to accelerating their commercial deployment. The platform provides a means for testing and demonstrating the interoperability of ITS applications, service and equipment in a real life environment by ensuring: a neutral demonstration environment for ITS operators from all parts of Europe and the rest of the world; and continuous verification and testing of systems, services, equipment and standards based on new technological developments and market trends. The platform was launched in November 2000 at the 7th Turin World Congress as the core element of the City Mobility Showcase. It is currently in its second stage of operation and available as a permanent general purpose ITS test-bed. The choice of Turin as the 'background scenario' results from the active role played by the city in the field of ITS applications for city mobility. In order to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, the city introduced the so-called 5T system in the 1990s for the integrated and automated management of private traffic and public transport, as well as the provision of real-time traveller information.
