Title: Oregon Answers Perpetual Pavement Analysis with a Field Test
Abstract: Most pavements are designed to last 20 years before cracks that are thought to begin at the bottom layer of the pavement reach the surface and require repair or replacement. But in this article, the Department of Transportation in Oregon found that conventional theory was wrong: cracks at the surface originate at the top and work their way down. With that knowledge and the observation that perpetual pavement, which is designed to last more than 50 years, a ten-mile segment of Interstate 5 has been completed recently. A section of that roadway contains instrumentation to help engineers evaluate performance. The article describes in detail construction of the section of roadway.
