Title: Perpetual Pavements: The Highway 401 Project
Abstract: A large-scale test of perpetual pavements is being conducted on Highway 4 near Woodstock, Ontario, as part of a larger highway reconstruction project. The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) has designed the test sections to withstand 400 million ESALs over its 50-year design life. Perpetual pavements with a rich bottom mix (a higher asphalt cement content and lower air voids for the base course) and those with an extra thick section both will be tested. The perpetual pavements will be 40 percent thicker than the standard pavement. Long-term monitoring of the test sections will involve strain gauges, an earth pressure cell, moisture probes and temperature sensors all of which will be powered by solar cells and connected to a data logger. Researchers will analyze the data and use it to model long-term performance.
