Abstract: This article describes a 1,640-foot stretch of Perpetual Pavement located near Angelica, New York on I-86 that is embedded with sensors aimed at providing information about stresses over time. The new pavement structure, which is composed of three layers of asphalt nine inches thick, was installed under the guidance of the New York State Department of Transportation. The composition of the three layers is described, as well as the placement of the sensors, which include four linear variable displacement transducers, two pressure cells, and 16 strain gauges. The author notes that Perpetual Pavement is intended to last 50 or more years without maintenance except for replacement of a thin top layer. The data to be collected will be used to verify and validate existing pavement design models as well as provide information for future designs.
