Title: The Evolution of Perpetual Pavements - An Overview
Abstract: This article describes the evolution of Perpetual Pavements. The concept of Perpetual Pavements, which is defined as an asphalt pavement designed and built to last longer than 50 years without needing major structural rehabilitation and requiring only periodic surface renewal to the top of the pavement, was introduced in 2000. The author notes that the approach to the design of Perpetual Pavements requires a different strategy than that normally applied to pavement design in the past. He also explains how road tests conducted in the late 1950s led to roadways being built with ever increasing thickness in order to meet the needs of higher traffic volume. The notion of Perpetual Pavements came into existence to not only provide a long-life structure but to prevent over-design.
