Title: DEVELOPMENTS IN THE DESIGN OF FLEXIBLE ROADS IN THE UK --BEARING CAPACITY OF ROADS AND AIRFIELDS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE, PLYMOUTH, ENGLAND, SEPTEMBER 16-18, 1986
Abstract: Since the 3rd edition of road note 29 was published in 1970 much further information on road performance has been obtained and there have been important advances in research on materials and on models of pavement behaviour. These advances have been used to develop new methods for the structural design of bituminous road pavements, firmly based on the systematic analysis of the performance of experimental roads interpreted in the light of structural theory: it takes account of variability and uncertainty in pavement engineering. The road foundation is designed primarily as a construction platform. Standard design curves are given for the thickness of bituminous and graded granular roadbases with the design life defined in probabilistic terms in relation to a pre-emptive strengthening strategy. Examples are given of the use of the method to adapt proven designs to take advantage of better materials, new design configurations and improvements in construction practice.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 815528.
