Title: 8TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON CONCRETE ROADS
Abstract: This paper reports the main results of the 8th International Symposium on Concrete Roads, held in Lisbon in September 1998. The Symposium had six main topics: (1) design and specifications; (2) progress in construction materials and techniques; (3) pavement performance and evaluation; (4) maintenance and rehabilitation; (5) safety and environment, including noise barriers; and (6) miscellaneous. It covered the state of the art of concrete pavements worldwide, discussed the current situation of pavements, and enabled deeper insights into the scientific and technical aspects of various issues relevant to economic questions of decision and execution. Many new design methods for concrete pavements were presented as catalogues, and various specifications were given for rigid and composite pavements and for properties of materials. Progress in materials and techniques for making and applying concrete included improvements in setting time and in several specific types of concrete, including those using recycled materials. Many empirical studies of service roads and experimental sections were reported. Attention was devoted to the use of thin and ultrathin concrete overlays and fast-track paving in road repairs. Miscellaneous topics included urban and low traffic roads, and airport and industrial pavements.
