Title: An introduction to asphalt pavement design in the UK
Abstract: Current pavement design practice in the UK as set out in the Highway Agency's Design Manual for Roads and Bridges is described and reviewed for the benefit of engineers new to this field of transport infrastructure. Both the historical background to present practice and the engineering principles involved in pavement design are presented so that the design details of the method are put into their proper context. The importance of linking material engineering properties to pavement design is emphasised and some aspects of present practice are critically reviewed. As much of the highway engineers' work is involved with the rehabilitation and improvement of existing roads, the structural evaluation of pavements is also briefly discussed.
