Abstract: Some ships built during the 1960s and 1970s are being operated in a derated mode, i.e., at power and speed considerably below the maximum rating of the engines. In general, their propellers are no longer optimal. In many cases, fuel savings can be achieved by replacing or modifying the propeller blades, and alterations that might be considered are enumerated. For ships suffering from severe propeller-induced vibrations, highly skewed blades are recommended. To improve bollard pull performance of old tugs fitted with open propellers, installation of a nozzle is suggested. Propeller blades should be cleaned to reduce surface roughness. Finally, some developments in electronic and pneumatic control systems that could improve propeller performance are listed.
