Title: THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PITCH PROPELLERS FOR HIGH POWERED MERCHANT SHIPS
Abstract: During the last decade the power available on a single shaft has increased to over 60,000 BHP with the introduction of new long stroke diesel engines. Associated with this has been a significant reduction in the shaft revolutions. As a result there has been an increase in propeller size, in particular for the container ship and the large tanker. The paper discusses these effects and the consequent development of the modern large fixed pitch propeller. Emphasis is placed upon developments in design in response to the conflicting requirements of acceptable cavitation and vibration properties with high efficiency. Typical case studies are presented. The associated practical effects of manufacture and the influence of dimensional tolerances are also addressed.
