Title: MODIFYING PROPELLER CHARACTERISTICS FOR BETTER EFFICIENCY IN AGEING SHIPS
Abstract: After a few years in operation, a ship is likely to experience a decrease in the number of revolutions of its propeller. This decrease in revolutions can be attributed to deterioration of the hull and the propeller in the form of fouling and roughness. This article deals with modifications that can be applied to a ships existing propeller in order to increase the number of revolutions. Two methods of modifying propellers are: 1) reduction of the propeller diameter, and 2) by reducing the effective pitch. These methods are fully described, with the effects of both methods on the propeller, and the considerations that must be taken into account whenever utilizing either of these methods included in the descriptions.
