Abstract: This article describes the development of wireless video-based devices and services and assesses their implications for a wide range of traffic applications. One, developed for the security sector, is open circuit television, a range of stand-alone cameras and monitors. These are much cheaper than wired closed circuit television systems and make surveillance affordable even to small communities, and in situations which require the cameras to be moved from one location to another. In the freight business, mobile video solutions can be used inside vehicles to ensure the integrity of goods being transported. Event-driven transmission can be applied, for example from the cargo doors being opened. Cameras on buses can send out alarms and provide evidence for incidents. Wireless video can be combined with other technology such as automatic number plate recognition. It would be possible for drivers to get traffic warnings direct to their mobile phones and also information on alternative routes.
