Title: WHAT'S DRIVING THE GROWING POPULARITY OF VIDEO SURVEILLANCE
Abstract: Although some bus drivers feel they are scrutinized when under video, surveillance managers claim tapes are pulled for security and customer service issues. After September 11, security concerns spawned some of the sales, but because video recording systems have become less expensive, a larger number of fleet owners are able to afford the installation of cameras. Because cameras require manpower to view and maintain, they can be more troublesome than helpful when introduced to an already overworked staff. Agencies can save money by investing in cameras because they deter those with fraudulent claims. Those who can't afford cameras can install dummy cameras as opposed to real ones, but this is a liability risk when people expect a tape for an investigation. With new technology, the fast forwarding of tapes can be cut out, while wireless networks eliminate the downloading of files. Additional benefits include improved image quality and real- time viewing is possible.
