Title: LIVE VIDEO OVER A LOW COST NETWORK? A MYTH NO LONGER
Abstract: Video is now a core asset in the management of many Intelligent Transport Systems. In many advanced installations, centrally monitored video cameras overlook roadways or mass transit locations to provide instant verification of reported incidents. Accurate incident verification and management can facilitate a timely response by field personnel and prevent the dispatch of inappropriate resources. The result can be a saving of time, cost and in many instances, aggravation. Communications technology is becoming ubiquitous, cost-effective and able to carry information such as high quality video, allowing deployment of video into areas where it was previously cost prohibitive to do so. It is only necessary to consider occasions when the availability video information would have made a significant difference to the cost or quality or safety of the service to understand why these systems are becoming so widespread. This paper discusses the state of the art of development of video technology and some recent changes that are making the dream of live video, a reality.
