Abstract: In their fight against crime, fleet operators need to be able to keep track of their vehicles. The ability to switch off the engine of a stolen vehicle remotely has become a powerful deterrent to criminals trying to steal a vehicle. The Belgian company Belgacom Alert Services (BAS) now provides electronic security and control solutions for mobile applications throughout Western Europe. It can (1) deliver certified, innovative hardware for mobile security and control devices; (2) provide high-quality installation and maintenance for these devices; (3) manage communication networks and airtime between mobile units and their communications centre; and (4) offer remote permanent monitoring through multiple control rooms. It has developed a broad range of solutions which can be adapted to customers' specific needs. FleetGuard 100-200 remotely neutralises a stolen vehicle when activated from a BAS control room; FleetGuard 400-500 tracks vehicles after their theft, and is undetectable and permanently active. The RoadRecorder 5000 is a digital on-board video monitoring system for public transport vehicles, including buses and trams, for which it provides a preventive security system. ViTrack is an off-line fleet management product, and Hi-G-Tek is an active and passive electronic tag-and-seal system.
