Abstract: Economic growth in the UK results in lifestyle improvements and a growth in the number of cars on the road. Increasing the cost of motoring by tax increases, congestion charges and motorway tolls only postpones congestion. Possible solutions to congestion are discussed. It was concluded that town and country congestion need to be treated separately. The author suggests that it would not be impracticable or markedly environmentally damaging to build more roads in the south-east. He proposed the construction of a new motorway loop from Maidenhead through Guildford, Crawley, Rochester and Chelmsford to the M11 at Cambridge and the construction of a new airport at Cliffe.
