Title: THE DEVELOPING ROLE OF STATE GOVERNMENT IN TRANSPORTATION
Abstract: Rapid urban growth, migration from rural to urban areas and increasing economic, social and political pressures on infrastructure has resulted in a patchwork of federal, state and local agencies unprepared and unable to meet growing demands. One specific area is transportation. In 1966, the Department of Transportation was created to try and bring order to a decentralized and confused array of federal, state and local agencies concerned with transportation issues. Improving the organization at the federal level has resulted in restructuring at state levels. Several states now have legislation pending to create departments of transportation. This more organized approach to planning can better deal with financial issues, long term transportation goals, better legislative coordination between state and federal agencies and promote cooperation between the various engineering personnel involved with highway and transportation planning, engineering, economics and design.
