Title: Expressions and significances of Axin and DNMT1 in lung cancer tissues
Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To examine the expressions and correlations of Axin and DNA methyltransferase 1(DNMT1) in lung cancers, and their relationships with the clinicopathological parameters of lung squanous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas.METHODS: The expression patterns and levels of Axin and DNMT1 were examined using immunohistochemistry in 100 lung cancer tissue samples.RESULTS: The expression of Axin was reduced significantly in lung cancers. The cytoplasmic expression of Axin was associated with the differentiation(P=0.044) of lung cancers;the nuclear expression of Axin was associated with the histological type(P=0.001) and TNM stage(P=0.016) of lung cancers. The expression of DNMT1 was enhanced significantly, and associated with the histological type(P=0.005),differentiation(P=0.038),TNM stage(P=0.031) and lymph node metastasis(P=0.032) of lung cancer samples. The reduced expression of Axin was significantly correlated with the high expression of DNMT1(r=-0.222,P=0.027).Furthermore,the nuclear expression of Axin was also negatively correlated with the expression of DNMT1 in lung adenocarcinoma tissues(r=-0.308,P=0.026).CONCLUSIONS: The reduced expression of Axin is correlated with the high expression of DNMT1 in lung cancers. The expression level of DNMT1 can be a mark to indicate the grade malignancy and progression of lung cancers.
