Title: Correlation between expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in colonic cancerous tissues and lymph node metastasis
Abstract: Objective To study the correlation between lymph node metastasis and the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in colonic cancerous tissues together with protein p53 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA).Methods The lymph nodes were examined by pathological method for metastasis.Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of VEGF,p53 and PCNA in 61 cases of colonic cancerous tissues. Results The positive rate of the VEGF expression was 61.90% (13/21) in colonic cancerous tissues with lymph node metastasis, and 26.67 % (12/45) in those without lymph node metastasis respectively with the difference being very significant (χ2= 7.555?7, P0.01).No significant correlation was found between lymph node metastasis and expression of p53 or PCNA.Conclusion VEGF expression may be an important factor for lymph node metastasis and prognosis in patients with colon cancer.
