Title: Expression and significance of apoptosis inhibitor survivin in laryngeal carcinoma
Abstract: Objective: To detect the expression of survivin,a novel inhibitor of apoptosis,in laryngeal carcinoma and to investigate its relation to pathological features of laryngeal carcinoma. Methods:Using streptavidin-biotinimmuno-histochemistry(SABC),we studied the expression of survivin in 33 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and 21 vocal cord polyp specimens which were paraffin-embeded.All specimens were approved by pathological examination after operation. Results: Survivin expression was higher in laryngeal carcinoma(63.6%) than in vocal cord polyps(28.6%)(P0.05),but there was no significant correlation between survivin expression and age, gender, clinical stage, histological type and lymph node metastasis in laryngeal cancer patients. Conclusions: Apoptotic inhibitor survivin is highly expressed in laryngeal carcinoma but lowly in vocal cord polyps. It is thought that survivin may be a new predictor for the oncogenesis and progression of laryngeal carcinoma.
