Title: Expression and biological significance of survivin and Bcl-2 in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma
Abstract: [Objective] To study the significance of expression of survivin in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) and its relationship with the expression of Bcl-2 gene. [Methods] The expression of survivin and Bcl-2 were detected using SP immunohistochemistry technique in 47 cases of tumor tissues. Their results were compared to that in adjacent of cancer and normal tissues. [Results] Percentage of survivin expression was 59.6% (28/47), 25.5% (12/47) in tumor tissues and adjacent tissues respectively. In contrast, normal laryngeal tissues did not express survivin. Over expression of survivin was related to the tumor grade, clinical stage and cervical nodal metastasis. Survivin positive cases were strongly associated with the expression of Bcl-2. [Conclusion] Bcl-2 may be closely correlated with tumor igenesis. High-expression of survivin indicates poor prognosis. Survivin could be a new diagnostic/therapeutic target in LSCC.
