Title: Vascular endothelial growth factor-D expression in hypopharyngeal carcinoma and its relationship with lymphatic metastasis
Abstract: Objective:To study the relation between expression of vascular endothelial growth factor D (VEGF-D) and lymphatic metastasis in hypopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods:Immunohistochemistry was used to examine the expression of VEGF-D in 64 cases of hypopharyngeal carcinoma. Results:The expression rate of VEGF-D was 57.8%(37/64).According to the intensity of VEGF-D expression, all cases were divided into three groups: negative group(27 cases),focal positive group(23 cases), and diffuse positive group(14 cases),whose rate of lymph node metasesis was 25.9%, 78.3% and 92.9%, respectively. The difference was statistically significant (P0.01).There was a significant correlation between the expression of VEGF-D and lymphatic metastasis. But the expression of VEGF-D was not related with venous invasion. Conclusions:The presence of VEGF-D in hypopharyngeal cancer may predict lymph node metastasis. In addition, restraining the expression of VEGF-D may be a new therapeutic strategy for hypopharyngeal cancer.
