Abstract: Methyl 2-fluoroisobutyrate,the key intermediates in the synthesis of triazine herbicides,was synthesized from methyl 2-hydroxyisobutyrate,thionyl chloride and fluorine hydride via esterification and fluorine substitution. The influences of esterification was investigated detailedly in molar ratio,temperature,reaction time and charging-up mode. Optimum reaction conditions were as follows:n(thionyl chloride) ∶n(methyl 2-hydroxyisobutyrate) =1∶1.7,-10~0 °C,3~4 h. The yield of Methyl 2-fluoroisobutyrate reached more than 75%.
