Title: Influence of family factors on mental health of college freshmen
Abstract: Objective To explore the impact of family factors on the mental health of college freshmen. Methods An investigation was conducted with Symptom Checklist 90 in 1487 college freshmen. All the data were analyzed by SPSS13.0.Results A significant difference on the α=0.001 and α=0.01(terror section) level was found in both SCL-90 section scores and total scores among students from different family atmospheres. The scores of students from families with harmonious atmospheres were significantly lower than those of others. The students from families of different structures, incomes and regions varied trivially in total scores, but the students from divorced, impoverished and rural families recorded relatively higher marks in certain section scores, and some of them had a significant variation in the α=0.05 or α=0.01 level. Conclusions The family factors have a significant impact on the mental health of college freshmen. The family atmosphere takes up a larger share in this impact compared with the family structure, income and region.A harmonious family atmosphere is particularly important for the mental health of college freshmen.
