Title: Comparative Study of Intima-media Thickness between Carotid and Femoral Arteries in Normal Subjects
Abstract: Objective To compare the intima media thickness between the carotid and femoral arteries in normal subjects for establishing diagnostic criteria of atherosclerotic plaque. Methods The intima media thickness (IMT), diameter (D), stiffness β and systolic SRs of the carotid and femoral arteries were measured by high resolution ultrasound. Results In carotid and femoral arteries, IMT, D and β increased with age increased, while SRs decreased. IMT in carotid and femoral arteries was (0.63±0.15)mm and (0.68±0.21)mm respectively, upper limit was 0.93mm and 1.11mm respectively. When the subjects were divided into age≥50 years group and age50 years group, value of upper limit in carotid IMT were 1.09mm , 0.85mm respectively. Value of upper limit in femoral IMT were 1.26mm and 0.98mm respectively. Conclusion That IMT≥1.2mm is defined as plaque is suitable to carotid artery or femoral artery with age50 years. It is more accurate to consider IMT≥1.3mm as a criteria of femoral plaque in age≥50 years.
