Title: Microvessel Density and Expression of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Squamous Cell Carcinomas of Lip.
Abstract: Objective To determine the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the effects of angiogenesis on cervical lymph node metastasis and progression of squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of lip. Methods 42 samples with SCC of lip were stained using the anti-CD34 and anti-VEGF monoclonal antibody by immunohistochemical S-P method to determine blood vessels and VEGF Expression. Results The MVD of the tumor was significantly higher than that of normal control tissue(P0.001), and the positive rate (61.90%) of VEGF expression in tumors was significantly higher than that in normal control tissues(10.00%, P0.001). The MVD of the VEGF positive cases in SCC of lip was significantly higher than that of the VEGF negative cases(P0.05), while the difference of MVD and VEGF expression had no significance between the cases with and without lymph node metastasis (P0.05). Conclusion There is an association between angiogenesis and tumor progression, and the expression of VEGF is much related to MVD in SCC of lip.
