Title: Effect of leukocytes removal on the quality of the fresh frozen plasma
Abstract: Objective To evaluate whether the removal of leukocytes from the fresh frozen plasma affects its quality. Methods Totally, 32 bags of fresh frozen plasma were examined. Briefly, after thawing, the leukocytes were removed from the plasma, and the change of plasma volume, the level of plasma protein, Ⅴ factor, Ⅷ factor, fibrinogen and complement were measured before and after leukocytes removal. Results Consistent with the international reference standard, the efficiency of leukocyte removal was above 99.9 %. There was no significant change in the plasma volume before and after leukocytes filtration (P0.05). There were also no significant changes in the level of plasma proteins, Ⅴ factor, Ⅷ factor, fibrinogen and complement before and after leukocytes filtration (P0.05). No bacteria were detected by hemoculture of all the plasma. Conclusions Leukocytes filtration immediately after thawing of the fresh frozen plasma, can efficiently remove the majority of leukocytes and their composites. There are no significant changes in the level of plasma proteins and blood coagulation factors during this process.
