Title: Environmentally friendly synthesis of methyl cinnamate
Abstract: Cinnamic acid was prepared by benzaldehyde react with acetic anhydride in choline and urea co- solvent at30℃. Then cinnamic acid was reacted with trimethyl borate to methyl cinnamate under no solvent and no catalyst condition. The structure of methyl cinnamate was verified by measuring, comparing melting point and1 HNMR and compared with the value with literature. The factors affecting the yield including reaction temperature, reactants mole ratio and reaction time were also studied. The best reaction conditions were: the mole ratio of trimethyl borate to cinnamic acid 3∶ 1,the reaction temperature 65℃,and reaction time 5h. Under the above conditions, the yield of methyl cinnamate can be up to 98. 1%. This environmental friendly synthetic procedure has the advantage of higher yield, easy recovery and reuse of by- products boric acid and extra trimethyl borate and no polluted wastes.
