Title: Expression of IL-8 in astrocytomas and relationship with angiogenesis
Abstract: Objective To explore the relationship between interleukin-8(IL-8) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) expression and angiogenesis in human gliomas. Methods Immunohistochemical staining was performed on the tissue array constructed with 45 cases of human astrocytomas and 6 cases of normal brains to detect expressions of IL-8,VEGF and CD34,and observe the correlation between IL-8 and VEGF expression levels and microvessel density(MVD) in astrocytomas with different pathologic grades. Results IL-8,VEGF in 6 cases of normal brain were undetectable. In 45 cases of gliomas,27 cases were IL-8 positive,32 cases VEGF positive. The MVD were significantly higher in IL-8 and VEGF positive cases than in mild positive or negative cases. The IL-8 and VEGF expressions were correlated with MVD.IL-8 expression was positively correlated with VEGF expression. Conclusion The expressions of IL-8 and VEGF have a correlation with histologic grade and MVD of astrocytoma, and both regulate the tumor angiogenesis in gliomas.
